Elekta wins approval to CE mark Agility device

Elekta, a developer of treatment planning systems for radiation therapy, has obtained approval to CE mark its Agility multileaf collimator (MLC).

Agility MLC is a beam-shaping device which is integrated into the head of a linear accelerator (linac) for treating cancer.

Agility features include 5mm thin 160 tungsten leaves with a leaf speed of up to 6.5cm per second and Integrity R3.0 software, the company's seventh generation digital control system which coordinates leaf movements with variable dose delivery rates and other treatment parameters.

Agility device enables clinicians to enhance treatment times for patients, while precisely delivers radiation doses to the contours of tumours.

Elekta president and CEO Tomas Puusepp said to meet the increasing need for cancer treatment, the company has collaborated with hospitals and research institutions to develop a solution that can increase the throughput of patients while delivering outstanding precision.

St James's University Hospital radiotherapy physics head Vivian Cosgrove said for patients, the use of Agility with volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) delivery will allow the hospital to administer stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) efficiently than current fixed-field approach.
